How Does Step Down transformer Decrease Voltage?

Step down transformers is built in a manner that it consists more windings on the primary side and fewer windings on the secondary side so that it can reduce the transmission, sub-transmission or distribution voltage. For Instance, your house needed a voltage of around 120 volts to 240 volts, but the lines on the pole over the street near your house are probably 4160 or 13800 Volts. So, here the Step Down Transformer is used to lower down the voltage.

The relationship between Voltage and Current is multiplicative, so the voltage gets increased and proportionally the current decreases as and when the voltage gets stepped-up for the transmission lines and that’s what we want. It’s really the current in the lines that causes heat and damage. The voltage is reduced to a more practical level and the current is stepped up proportionally to a more effective quantity as and when the power gets stepped down for distribution purposes. For understanding How Does Step Down transformer Decrease Voltage we first need to explore what is Step Down Transformer and the working principle of Step Down Transformer. Please have a look below:

Working Principle of Step Down Transformer

Transformers work on the principle, which states that “an electromotive force is induced in the circuit is being proportional to the rate of change in the flux linkage when the magnetic flux linking a circuit changes”. Mutual induction between the windings performs the transmission action in a transformer.

The Electro-Motive Force-induced between the two windings called as “Turns Ratio” is determined by the number of turns in primary and secondary winding respectively. But it is also important to know that what decides the voltage reduction capability of step-down transformers? Well, it depends on the turn ratio of the primary winding and secondary winding.

In Step Down Transformers manufactured by Step Down Transformer India, The amount of flux linkage to the secondary coil of the transformer remains than the primary coil, because the number of windings in the secondary coil has also been kept less than the number of windings in the primary coil.

The emf which is induced will be less in the secondary coil, as the result of the above set up. This reduced emf ultimately reduces the voltage at the secondary winding compared to the primary winding.

Here is the formula that is used to design a Step-Down Transformer:

  • Ns = No. of turns in Secondary Coil
  • Np = No. of turns in Primary Coil
  • Vs = Voltage in Secondary Coil
  • Vp = Voltage in Primary Coil

But the thing to remember is that to work a transformer as a “Step Down Transformer”, it is necessary that the number of turns in secondary winding should always be kept less than the number of turns in the primary winding of the transformer i.e. Np>Ns.
